Himalayan Gems
as Investment
Assets

For five centuries, precious stones have outperformed paper assets in periods of instability. Pakistani gemstones — undervalued, certified, and geographically locked — represent the most compelling gemstone investment opportunity of this decade.

The Investment Case

Why Gemstones. Why Pakistan. Why Now.

Diamonds have been marketed as investments for decades. The reality is different — diamonds are commoditised, mass-produced, and increasingly replaceable by laboratory alternatives. Coloured gemstones of verifiable natural origin are a fundamentally different asset class.

Pakistan's gemstone deposits — Swat Valley Emeralds, Kashmir Rubies, Neelum Sapphires, Katlang Pink Topaz — occupy an extraordinary position: world-class geological quality, GPS-verifiable single-source origin, and current pricing that reflects obscurity rather than value. This is the definition of an undervalued asset.

The precedent exists. Mozambican rubies were largely unknown 20 years ago — today they command near-Burmese prices at Christie's and Sotheby's. Ethiopian opals, Malawi rubies, Kenyan tsavorite — all followed the same trajectory. Pakistani gemstones are at the beginning of this recognition curve. The collectors who entered early in each of these origins made extraordinary returns. VERDAAN exists to give you that access.

The Standard

The VERDAAN Investment Grade Manifesto

Every stone bearing the VGD Investment Grade designation must meet all five criteria without exception. There is no partial compliance. There is no sliding scale. Either a stone meets the standard, or it does not carry the designation.

I
🔬
Point One
No Heat. No Oil. No Compromise.

Every VGD stone must be certified untreated — no heat treatment, no fracture filling, no coating, no beryllium diffusion. The certification must be explicit: "No indications of heating detected." This is not a preference. It is an absolute requirement. A treated stone cannot be an investment grade stone.

II
📍
Point Two
GPS-Verified Himalayan Origin

Every VGD stone comes with GPS coordinates of its mine of origin — Swat Valley (34.7°N, 72.4°E), Neelum Valley (34.5°N, 73.9°E), Katlang (34.3°N, 72.0°E). Origin is not a story we tell. It is a coordinate we document. This is the geographical lock that no other provenance claim can replicate.

III
⚖️
Point Three
Minimum 2.0 Carats

Investment grade stones begin at 2.0 carats for rubies and emeralds. Below this threshold, individual stones do not achieve the liquidity required for an investment asset. At 2ct+, a certified Himalayan ruby or emerald has established secondary market value at Christie's, Bonhams, and specialist dealers globally.

IV
👁️
Point Four
Eye Clean Clarity

No inclusions visible to the naked eye at standard viewing distance. Inclusions visible under 10x magnification are expected and natural — this is the "jardin" of an authentic stone. But the face-up appearance must be clean, vibrant, and commanding. Clarity directly affects marketability and secondary market value.

Common Questions

Investment Grade — FAQ

How is a VERDAAN VGD certificate different from a GIA certificate?
GIA certifies gemmological characteristics — colour, clarity, treatment, and sometimes origin. The VERDAAN VGD certificate adds three things GIA does not: GPS mine coordinates, the 5-point Investment Grade assessment checklist, and the legally binding 80% buy-back guarantee. For investment purposes, the VGD certificate is the more complete document. GIA/IGI lab reports are available on request and are referenced within the VGD certificate.
Why does Pakistani origin create an investment opportunity?
Pakistani gemstones of equivalent quality to Colombian emeralds and Burmese rubies currently trade at 30–60% lower prices due to origin recognition alone — not due to quality differences. As Pakistani origin gains recognition at auction houses and in the collector market (a process already underway), this gap closes. Early collectors in underrecognised origins — Mozambique rubies, Ethiopian opals — achieved significant appreciation as recognition grew. VERDAAN's position is that Pakistani gemstones are at the beginning of this curve.
How do I exercise the buy-back guarantee?
Contact VERDAAN at hello@verdaanstone.com with your VGD certificate number. We will arrange assessment within 14 days and provide a formal repurchase offer within 21 days. Payment is made within 30 days of agreement. The original certificate must be returned with the stone.
What is the minimum investment for VGD stones?
VGD Investment Grade stones typically begin at £1,500 for smaller certified specimens and range to £50,000+ for museum-quality collector pieces. The Private Circular membership provides priority access to VGD inventory. Contact us to discuss your investment parameters.
Can I view VGD stones in person before purchasing?
Yes. VERDAAN arranges private viewings in London by appointment. We also attend major trade fairs — Vicenzaoro, GemGenève, and Mineralienwelt — where VGD stones can be examined. Contact us to arrange a viewing.
